Ross McQueen Family
Daniel Ross married Catherine McQueen in 1805
Under Research
Finding Daniel (Donald) Ross’s history is proving difficult as some family history had him from the Caithness area or perhaps further south, as Daniel's son William built a house in Alva and called it Balnogowan. There is a Balnagowan Castle in Easter Ross. A lot of Ross ancestry came from there.
Ancient Ross History
A History of Easter Ross, a collection of manuscripts originally from Fearn Abbey 1471-1667 edited by Robin Adam in a book "Calendar of Fearn", compiled by Ian Borthwick Cowan, and published by the Scottish History Society.
Calendar of Fearn (The Scottish History Society, Edinburgh, 1991)
Over 180 volumes, published by the Scottish History Society, containing original sources on Scotland's history and people. With a wide range of subjects, the books collectively cover all periods from the 12th to 20th centuries, and reflect changing trends in Scottish history. Sources are accompanied by scholarly interpretation, references and bibliographies. Volumes are usually published annually, and more digitised volumes will be added as they become available.
One only has to read some of the books on the highland clearances, (John Prebble writes a good one) to realize the great upheaval in Scotland at this time.
The defeat of the Jacobite rebellion at Culloden in 1746,
marked the start of the downfall of the clans in the Highlands.
The men who for generations had supported and fought for the clan
chief were removed from the land making way for
The Great Cheviot Sheep. A wave of mass emigration came in 1792,
known to Gaelic-speaking Highlanders as the Bliadhna nan Caorach
the "Year of the Sheep".
The forced eviction of inhabitants of the Highlands between
1750 and 1850 resulted in a whole race being dispossessed and dispersed.
Finding both Daniel Ross and Catherine McQueen records are proving difficult, especially with the confusion of the name (Daniel, Donald) and area to search (Caithness or Stirlingshire).
Extracts from Susan (Ross) Thompson correspondence ...
The Death records are stories in themselves. William Ross's parents are named on that record as Daniel Ross, Carter,
and Catherine McQueen his mother. (the meaning of Carter is "one who transports goods")
I had their marriage down as May 5, 1805 at Clackmannan, Clackmannan from the LDS records, but the Donald
on our hand written tree seemed to be so much more credible, until the death certificate.
This is what it means to genealogically "prove" a fact absolutely correct.
There was no Donald or Catherine McQueen to find in any record that I could access.
How and why Agnes Rorison (Fingland) Ross wrote "Donald" is a mystery. It is possible that she may have written Daniel's father's name instead of his by mistake and that Donald is the generation back further in the 1700's.
How I came to figure Daniel was the real name was in the Scottish naming pattern.
William Ross and Isobel used it. The first boy is named after the father's father.
William's first born son was Daniel and recorded in the Ross family bible in Launceston.
My brother Christopher found Winifred Susan Ross, his last surviving daughter living in Launceston
and he saw the Bible and copied out of it that branch of the William Ross emigrees to Tasmania.
When Winny died the Bible was snapped up by an antique dealer which is a shame.
Family history has it that Catherine McQueen came from around Stirling area.
